In acknowledging this letter we thought it
desirable to point out how unjustifiable was the President's
suggestion that we had been aiming to bring about the
"complete separation" of the Extension. Attention was
directed to the fact that we had throughout contemplated
leaving the management and control entirely in the hands of
the Executive Committee and that we had agreed that both
Bryanston Square and the Hongkong Extension should be
administered as distinct parts of one Hospital under the
same President, the same Executive Committee, the same
Medical Staff and the same Lady Superintendent.
The
question was asked how, in face of this, it could be alleged
that our stipulations involved complete separation or in
any way infringed the conditions of the original agreement.
Finally, it was pointed out that a generous interpretation
by the Committee of the terms of the original agreement, far
from leading to the realisation of the fear expressed by the
President that it would prove detrimental to the interests of
the Hospital, held out a better prospect of its expansion
than could be looked for from unreasoning resistance to the
Colony's clear right to be recognised as sponsor for the
Extension
